About EPD Air Quality Index (AQI)

This AQI, which is based on the European Air Quality Index, informs the public on the quality of the air using the following pollutants - nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10) and ozone. Additional information indicating precautions, if any, to be taken by the public are also issued.

The AQI is obtained using low cost sensors/ indicative monitoring equipment located at the Environmental Protection Department in Dalkeith; the Treasury Building in Bridgetown; and the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology & Hydrology, Husbands, St. James. It is true, that the current equipment provides preliminary/rough data and it is hoped that improvements will lead to a more robust network in the future.
